Dial test indicators for alignment and runout checks
A dial test indicator measures small differences in height and runout in places a plunger dial gauge cannot reach. The stylus swivels on its axis, so you can measure at an angle inside a bore, in a groove or against a flange. In machine building it is the standard instrument for aligning a workpiece on a lathe or a milling machine and for checking the runout of a shaft.
Two values decide the choice. The graduation gives the smallest scale division: 0.01 mm is enough for setting up fixtures, while 0.002 mm and 0.001 mm belong to bearing and spindle work. Measuring range follows from it, from 0.14 mm on the finest versions to 1.5 mm on the coarser ones. The finer the reading, the shorter the range you are left with.
Construction counts as well. The horizontal model works along a face, while a tilted head helps at points that are hard to get to. A set with a magnetic stand is ready to use straight onto a machine table and saves improvising a fixture. The other analogue measuring instruments follow on from this; for lengths at building scale a tape measure is enough.
