Material detectors and wall scanners for safe drilling

A material detector shows what sits inside a wall, a floor or a ceiling before you drill or chase. The scanner locates live cables, metal and plastic pipes, timber studs and reinforcing bar, and gives the position and often the depth as well. One misplaced hole in a heating pipe or a live circuit costs more than the instrument itself, which is why the detector is standard kit for installers, carpenters and anyone working on refurbishment.

The difference lies in the measuring principle. Simple stud finders work capacitively and mainly find timber and metal at limited depth. Heavier wall scanners work with radar, see deeper into concrete, separate ferrous from non-ferrous metal and pick up voids and plastic pipes. On refurbishment work in reinforced concrete that difference is decisive.

Then look at the power supply and at storage. Models on 1.5V AA batteries are light and always ready to work. Versions on a 12V or 18V battery share a platform with the rest of the machines in the van and become interesting once the detector goes out every day. Supply in a case also protects the sensor face against knocks. The rest of the digital detection and inspection instruments follows on from this.
