Thrust bearings for forces along the shaft

Axial bearings, also called thrust bearings, are built for forces that act along the shaft. They are the counterpart of the radial bearing, which is loaded at right angles to it. A radial bearing takes such a thrust load only to a limited degree. As soon as the axial force becomes the main load, a bearing made specifically for it belongs in the design. Think of turntables, spindles, screw jacks, crane hooks and vertically mounted shafts.

The rolling element sets the character. A thrust ball bearing is the simplest answer at moderate load and low speed. A cylindrical roller thrust bearing carries more, because the contact is a line instead of a point. A spherical roller thrust bearing also absorbs misalignment of the shaft and so tolerates a less than perfect fit. A needle roller thrust bearing builds very low and fits where there is hardly any room. An angular contact thrust version takes a radial component alongside the axial force.

Look at speed and lubrication as well, because these bearings are more sensitive to both than radial ones. All rolling bearings sit one level up.
