Fall arrest lanyards with an integrated shock absorber

A safety line connects the harness to the anchor point and arrests a fall before the force on the body runs too high. The shock absorber in the line tears open in a controlled way and holds the arrest force within the limit the standard sets. Without an absorber a line is not a fall arrest lanyard but a positioning device, and that distinction decides whether the equipment does its job in a fall.

Choose the material first. Kernmantle rope of 11 mm, 12 mm or 14 mm is supple, stays easy to handle and takes abrasion over an edge reasonably well. Webbing is flatter, picks up less dirt and is more comfortable where the line hangs on the harness all day. The usual length is 1.5 m; longer anchor lines are meant for use with a guided type fall arrester.

If you work with two legs so you stay clipped on while climbing, choose a twin version with a shared absorber. Check the connectors at the ends as well, because the gate opening has to suit the anchorage available on site. Fall protection also holds the lifeline, intended for positioning and work restraint.
