Drill bushings for jigs and repeat work

A drill bushing is the hardened sleeve that guides the drill in a jig. Without that guidance a twist drill wanders on a sloped or rough surface and the hole comes out oversized; with a bushing the hole stays square, on size and in the same position, hole after hole. That makes the part hard to do without in batch work, in assembly jigs and in machine building, where dozens of identical holes have to land in the same place.

The versions follow the DIN standards. A bushing to DIN 172-A has a collar that rests on the jig and stops the bushing being pressed through; DIN 179-A is the version without a collar, pressed flush into the plate. Both come in short and longer lengths. Choose on the nominal drill diameter, roughly 4 to 16 mm, and on the outside diameter and height that suit the thickness of your jig.

Check the fit of the receiving hole as well, because the bushing has to sit as an interference fit and must not turn with the drill. Related holders sit under hole saw arbor.
