Disc cutters in HSS-E for metalworking

A disc cutter sits as a disc on an arbor and cuts with teeth on its circumference. That is how you saw slots, part off and machine faces on the side of a workpiece, on a milling machine or a machining centre. The tooth form decides how the chip clears. On a cross-cut version the teeth are angled alternately, so the sideways forces largely cancel each other and the cutter runs more calmly in deeper slots.

HSS-E is alloyed with cobalt and holds its hardness at a higher cutting temperature than plain high speed steel. That makes it suitable for alloyed and stainless steel, where a plain high speed steel cutter dulls too quickly. If you work to fixed profile shapes, convex and concave cutters put a radius into the workpiece alongside the straight version.

Choose on diameter, width and bore, and match the spindle speed to the material and the cutting speed. Common diameters run from 8 to 160 mm. For face milling wider surfaces, look at shell end mill.
