Cylindrical roller bearings for high radial load

A cylindrical roller bearing carries a high radial load because the rollers contact the raceway along their full length, where a ball touches only a point. That makes this bearing type the standard choice in gearboxes, electric motors, rolls and pumps: high load capacity in a compact envelope, and a higher permissible speed than most other roller bearings reach.

The version follows from the design. Bearings with a loose inner or outer ring take up axial movement of the shaft and so act as the non-locating bearing, while versions with flanges on both sides also guide light axial forces. Double row super-precision bearings with a tapered bore go into machine tool spindles, where running accuracy weighs more than load capacity. Cage design, radial internal clearance and tolerance class further decide the behaviour under heat and speed, so carry over the full designation of the bearing being replaced.

SKF supplies this range. Under lighter combined load a deep groove ball bearing is often the better choice, and under heavy shock loading a spherical roller bearing.
