Timber construction screws for structure and outdoor work

A timber construction screw joins wood to wood where the load really counts: purlins, trusses, deck substructure, timber frame walls and decking. The difference from an ordinary screw is the part thread. Because the smooth shank part takes no grip in the upper piece of timber, the thread in the lower piece pulls both parts tight together instead of pushing them apart. Choose the length so that the full threaded section engages in the lower piece, with versions up to 400 mm for heavy structural work.

Head shape sets the finish and how the load spreads. A countersunk head sinks flush into the surface, a raised head stays slightly visible and is less likely to pull through soft timber, and a washer head takes the load on thick joints and on fittings. Take stainless A2 as soon as the joint sits outdoors or stays damp, because corroding zinc-plated steel expands and splits the timber from the inside. The star drive keeps the bit centred and stops it camming out at high torque, which on long screws is the difference between driving through and a ruined head.
