Precision balls as a replacement part for bearings
Loose bearing balls are replacement parts: chrome steel precision balls used to rebuild a bearing, a guide or a mechanism. They go into the overhaul of rolling bearings, into linear guides, into ball cages and into assemblies where a single ball carries load or sets a position.
Two properties decide whether a ball is usable. The diameter has to match the original down to hundredths of a millimetre, because a cage allows no play. Sizes here run from a few millimetres to just over 30 mm. The precision grade counts as well: it fixes how round the ball is and how small the size deviation stays within a batch. Balls from one grade are interchangeable with each other, while mixing grades spreads the load unevenly.
Chrome steel is the standard here: hard, wear resistant and able to take a high point load running dry or lubricated. SKF supplies the range. On an overhaul, replace the complete set rather than the damaged ball alone, because used and new balls differ in size. Other loose bearing parts sit under inner rings and spacer rings.
