Single-row tapered roller bearings for shafts and hubs

A tapered roller bearing takes radial and axial force at the same time, because the tapered rollers run at an angle between the inner and outer ring. That contact angle sets the balance between the two: the larger the angle, the more axial load the bearing carries. Which is why they sit in wheel hubs, gearboxes, rolls, spindles and drive shafts, wherever the load does not fall neatly at right angles to the shaft.

Tapered roller bearings almost always work in pairs, set facing each other, since a single bearing takes axial force in one direction only. On assembly you set the clearance or the preload: too loose gives play and knocking noises, too tight makes the bearing run hot. The inner ring with its roller cage mounts separately from the outer ring, which makes fitting into a closed housing considerably easier.

When replacing, establish the bore, the outside diameter and the overall width, and keep the contact angle of the original bearing, because that governs the axial capacity. For mainly radial load look at the deep groove ball bearing or the cylindrical roller bearing.
