Silicone sprays for plastics, rubber and metal

Silicone spray leaves a thin, water-repellent film that lubricates where an oil would attract dust or attack the material underneath. That makes it the default on plastics, rubber and painted surfaces: window and door seals stay supple, drawer runners and hinges stop squeaking, and gaskets keep their shape through cold weather instead of tearing on the first opening.

Its second job is release. A light film stops concrete, adhesive, paint and hot plastic bonding to moulds, blades and benches, which cuts cleaning time and protects the tool underneath. Versions certified for incidental food contact belong in production areas where an ordinary lubricant is not permitted.

A couple of cautions are worth keeping in mind. Silicone migrates, so it has no place near a surface that will later be painted, glued or welded, and overspray travels further than it looks. Where a durable load-carrying film is needed instead, grease holds up better under pressure, and a heavier oil suits enclosed mechanisms that are serviced on a schedule.
