Silicone adhesives and sealants

Silicone adhesives and sealants fill joints that have to stay flexible after curing. Think of the junction between sanitary ware and tiling, glazing in frames, movement joints in facades and seals around machinery. A silicone sealant bonds to glass, glazed tile and anodised aluminium, and stays permanently supple rather than curing hard and breaking out. The distinction that decides the choice is the cure chemistry.

Neutral silicone is low odour and does not attack concrete, natural stone, zinc or copper, which makes it broadly usable. Acetoxy silicone cures faster and bonds well to glass and tile, but does not belong on porous or sensitive metal substrates. For sanitary work, choose a version with fungicidal additives. For sealing a flange there is a surface sealant that replaces the classic gasket.

Look further at colour, at the volume of the cartridge and at the joint width you have to bridge. Silicone cannot be overpainted. If the joint does have to take paint, look at MS polymer. The full overview of sealants and adhesive types sits under adhesives and sealants.
