Polishing sponges for cutting, gloss and finishing

A polishing sponge spreads polishing compound evenly across the surface and works out fine scratches without losing material the way sanding does. Hardness decides the result. A firmer sponge cuts through and takes scratches out of paint or metal, a soft sponge is meant for the last pass, where gloss and depth count and you do not want to introduce new swirls. With most manufacturers colour stands for that hardness, so keep to one coding within a brand.

Choose the diameter to suit your backing pad. Sizes here run from around 80 to 170 mm, with thicknesses around 20 to 30 mm. Everything attaches with hook and loop, so you switch between the cutting step and the finishing step in seconds.

Work at low speed and keep the sponge flat, because tilting burns the edge in and saturates the sponge with compound. Bosch, Milwaukee, Festool, Metabo, Makita, Fein, HiKOKI and 3M supply the common sizes. For coarser preparation a fibre disc belongs in the sequence, and the wider range for sanding, sharpening, polishing and deburring follows on.
