Pin wrenches for round nuts that have no hex flats

A pin wrench engages the drilled holes or the slot of a nut that has no hex flats. Nuts like these turn up on the flange nuts of angle grinders, on the adjusting nuts of bearing housings and on round nuts in machine building, where an open ended or ring spanner finds nothing to grip. Without the right tool such a nut is damaged on the first attempt.

Decide on the version first. A fixed pin wrench fits one size and gives the most grip, which counts on a nut that has seized. An adjustable one covers a range of diameters and is more practical if you work on varied equipment. Alongside those sits the version with a nose, for nuts with a slot in the side instead of holes in the face.

Sizing turns on two figures: the diameter of the pin, here from 3 to 8 mm, and the distance between the holes or the diameter of the nut. Measure both on the nut itself, not on whatever tool happens to be in the box. On grinders the wrench is often specific to the machine as well. If your size is not listed, look further in spanners and wrenches, which also holds the pin keys.
