Pickaxes and mattocks for heavy ground work

A pickaxe is indispensable for heavy ground work: with the pointed end you break open hard, stony or frozen terrain, and with the blade end you cut and lever roots and compacted ground loose. Landscapers, road builders and utility companies use the tool to open trenches where a spade gives up. Performance depends on the head weight and the handle: a heavier head delivers more striking force, while a fibreglass handle dampens shocks and is lighter than wood.

Brands such as Bahco and Xhander offer both classic pickaxes and non-sparking versions in copper beryllium or aluminium bronze, intended for work in explosive environments where a spark is dangerous. When choosing, look at the overall length, here from roughly 360 to 910 mm, because a longer handle gives more leverage but also needs more room.

A good balance between head and handle prevents fatigue during prolonged cutting. Check that the head sits firmly and durably on the handle. This way you tackle even the hardest ground efficiently.
