Inspection mirrors for maintenance and checking

An inspection mirror lets you look where your head will not go: behind an engine block, under a chassis, into a weld seam or behind a bundle of pipework. It is the cheapest inspection tool there is and it works without a battery, without a screen and without settings. The handle sets the reach. A fixed handle is rigid and predictable; a telescopic handle extends to around half a metre and fits in a breast pocket when collapsed.

A ball joint under the mirror lets you set the angle without twisting your wrist, which makes the difference as soon as you are working one-handed. Choose the head on the space you have. A round head from 36 mm passes through a small opening, while a larger round or rectangular head around 55 mm gives more overview in a single glance. Versions with an LED light the surface you are looking at, and in a dark pit or behind a panel that is often the real problem rather than the mirror itself.
