Bendable magnetic fingers for recovering dropped parts

A flexible magnetic pick-up tool is a bendable rod with a magnetic head, made to recover dropped parts from spaces a hand or a pair of pliers cannot reach. A bolt in an engine bay, a nut behind a machine cabinet, a swarf curl at the bottom of a blind hole: the tool bends around obstacles and holds the shape you set it in.

Reach follows from the length. Versions around 400 mm work in the engine compartment and behind panels, lengths past 500 mm get down into deeper housings. The head diameter decides where you can still get in. Fine heads from a few millimetres fit into bores and narrow gaps, thicker heads carry more weight. Some versions lift up to 3 kg, enough for tools and larger fasteners.

Bear in mind that a magnet only picks up ferromagnetic material. Aluminium, brass and many stainless grades stay where they are. Keep your distance when working on electronics or on data carriers. Gedore, Facom, Bahco and Expert supply the range. More magnetic aids sit under magnets.
