Bench vices for industry and maintenance

A bench vice is the third hand on any bench: it holds the workpiece square while both of yours file, saw, tap or press. Jaw width is the first decision, and the usual range runs from around 63 mm for fine assembly up to 175 mm for structural steel and pipework. Wider jaws bring more clamping force and a heavier body, which is exactly what you want when a part is being hammered rather than trimmed.

Look at the base next. A 360° rotatable base lets you turn the work into the light instead of unclamping it, while a fixed base gives maximum rigidity for percussive work. A square guide resists the downward deflection that ruins a cut, and interchangeable jaw plates let you swap hardened steel for soft or pipe jaws so finished surfaces survive clamping.
