Combination drill taps in HSS for metric threads

A drill tap drills the core hole and cuts the thread in the same movement. That saves a tool change and, more to the point, it removes the risk of picking the wrong tapping drill: drill diameter and thread size are fixed against each other here, so the thread height is always right. For installation, maintenance and assembly in thin walled material it is the quickest route to usable thread.

The version decides where the tool belongs. The HSS drill tap with a square drive goes in a tap wrench or a tapping machine and gives the most control in tough material. The bit version with a hex shank runs straight from a cordless screwdriver or a drill and is meant for fast work in sheet steel and aluminium. Choose the first for accuracy, the second for pace.

Metric sizes run here from M3 to M12. Watch the difference between a version for through holes and one for blind holes: in a through hole the chips may run out ahead of the tool, while in a blind hole they have to be carried back, or the hole packs up and the tap breaks. Within threading the machine tap stays the right choice once the core hole is already drilled.
