Body files: milled file blades, impact files and holders

A body file levels sheet metal and cured filler with milled teeth that cut the material away instead of smearing it over. When you flatten a repair area, that is the difference between a file which clogs after two strokes and a blade which keeps cutting. The build is usually in two parts: a loose blade is clamped in a holder or a frame, so the blade can be changed without putting the tool down, and on an adjustable holder the curve can be set for convex or concave work.

Choose on the cut and on the length. A coarse cut takes material off quickly during the first levelling, while a finer cut finishes the shape before sanding starts. Blades of 300 mm and 350 mm cover the usual work, and shorter versions reach tight spots along edges and rebates. A semi-soft blade follows a slight curve, a harder blade stays flat and takes the high spots off first.
