Planer blades for power planers and surface planers

A planer blade decides the finish. With a sharp edge set exactly to height, the timber leaves the machine smooth and free of ridges. Once the edge dulls, the motor works harder, soft wood scorches and the grain tears out around knots. Changing in good time is cheaper than working on with a blunt edge.

Two materials dominate. HSS can be reground and gives a very clean cut in solid timber. Carbide lasts far longer in board material, glued timber and lightly contaminated reclaimed wood. Reversible disposable knives are turned round as soon as one side is dull and need almost no setting, which wins time on site. Spiral blades spread the cut across the width and therefore run more smoothly and more quietly.

Watch working width and thickness when choosing. Hand planers usually work at 82 mm or 92 mm, surface planers at 260 mm. Measure the existing knife before you order, because a difference of a few tenths no longer fits the head. Related tooling sits under planing and chiseling, and hand work is done with a separate chisel.
