Cutting, refining and finishing polishing pastes

Polishing compound removes the scratch pattern left by abrasives and brings a surface up to gloss, working through a sequence rather than in one step. Cutting grades level sanding marks and light defects; refining grades clear the haze the cutting stage leaves behind; finishing grades lift depth and clarity on dark paint and polished metal. Skipping a stage almost always costs more time than it saves.

Match the paste to the pad and the machine speed, since an aggressive compound on a hard pad will burn through an edge, and a fine paste on a wool pad simply loads up. Silicone-free formulations matter in bodyshops where the surface will be painted again, and water-based products keep sling and airborne residue down. For stainless, aluminium and hard plastics, bar and solid-stick compounds run on a mop rather than a foam pad.

Check working temperature and open time before starting a large panel. Part of the broader abrasives range, and where a surface needs stripping rather than refining, blasting media is the earlier step.
