Hand sanding blocks for flat, curved and profiled surfaces

A sanding block puts even pressure behind the abrasive, which is the whole reason a hand-sanded face comes out flat instead of dished. Grade the body to the work: a hard block cuts fast and keeps edges crisp on frames, sills and panel joints, while a soft or foam-backed body follows a curve and stops the abrasive digging in at the corners. Format matters as much as hardness, so check the block against the abrasive you already stock, whether that is a strip cut from a roll, a punched rectangle or a round pad.

Hook and loop backing swaps sheets in seconds and suits fast grit progressions, while a clamped body runs cheaper on plain paper over long runs. Sizes here span narrow bodies for glazing bars and rebates up to wide ones that cover a door in fewer strokes.
