Chalk line reels and snap lines
A chalk line reel marks a dead straight line in one movement, over a length you will never reach with a pencil and a straightedge. Hook the end, pull the chalked line taut, lift it and let go. The snap deposits the powder on the surface. Floor layers, roofers, ceiling fitters and plasterers all set a plane out this way before the real work starts.
Start from the line length. Compact reels run to a few metres, while lines of 30 m and more are meant for setting out whole floor areas. A closed metal housing keeps the chalk dry on a dusty site and survives a drop better. Look at the rewind as well: a larger crank or a higher gearing winds the line back noticeably faster, which saves time on every pull once the line is long.
A tapered tip and a solid hook let you anchor the line on your own, with nobody holding the far end. The rest of the marking-out kit sits under tracing.
