Cutting discs for steel, stainless steel and stone

A cutting disc cuts through material with a thin reinforced wheel turning at high speed. Thickness decides the result. A disc of 1 mm gives a narrow kerf, less heat input and less burr, which makes it the standard for sheet and sections. Thicker discs tolerate more side load and last longer in solid material.

Match the disc to the material. For stainless steel, inox discs are free of iron, chlorine and sulphur, so the cut face is not contaminated and does not rust later. Ordinary steel, cast iron and stone each call for a different grit and bond combination. Always check the bore and the maximum speed against the machine as well: a disc with a 22.23 mm bore belongs on an angle grinder with the matching mount, while small discs around 24 mm belong on rotary tools.

Work with a straight continuous cut and never force sideways, because that is the main cause of breakage. PFERD, Bosch, Metabo, Norton, Tyrolit and 3M are among the brands here. For shaped work in sheet you use a jigsaw blade rather than a disc, and the wider range for sawing and cutting follows on.
