Li-ion batteries are becoming stronger and lighter. They’re also able to work longer on charge. Each power tool brand has developed specific battery technology and has incorporated it into its products. This means the same battery is suitable for all power tools from the same brand but is hardly compatible with other brands. Although voltage and amperage may be the same, this does not necessarily mean that one brand’s batteries fit in tools from another brand. The same goes for the chargers.
So, if you were looking forward to taking advantage of the interchangeability of the batteries, chances are you’re stuck with one brand. Although the battery platforms of leading professional brands do not differ much in specifications, each brand has its unique qualities. Here we look at the top four brand’s battery technology — something they take particular pride in.
Considerations when selecting batteries
The qualities you look for in a battery platform depend on your needs and the tasks you use your battery tool for. Volts tell you how much power a battery can deliver and amps — how long the battery will run on a charge. If you have a large drill or jigsaw, you will need a powerful battery. A lower voltage can be used for smaller tools. Most cordless tools are rated at 18V or 20V, but some power tools require more power. With several brands, you can connect two 18V or 20V batteries to achieve double the power.
The higher the Ah — Ampere hour value — the longer you can work with the tool. But if you work a lot in tight spaces or when weight is an issue, a better option would be smaller and lighter batteries with lower amps.
DeWalt XR Lithium-Ion series

DeWalt is making headway with its XR Lithium-Ion series. DeWalt 18V batteries are compatible with the entire DeWalt XR range. These batteries are designed to have 33% more capacity than standard packs. Distinguishing features include ‘no memory’ and almost no self-discharge, which ensures maximum productivity and less downtime. DeWalt also uses a 3-LED system that provides instant feedback on the state of the charge. One of the most notable things about DeWalt 18V batteries is how light they are. For battery packs with such a long run time, you would expect them to add significantly more weight to your tool.
Makita LXT Lithium-Ion series

Makita is known for its fast charging technology that allows for more work per charge. A special function of Makita is the optimization of energy consumption — achieved through communication between the battery and the tool, creating the ideal conditions to extend battery life.
Under the name LXT X2, Makita also offers a dual 18V series. Makita’s twin 18v machines deliver more power and run time without leaving the 18v platform by using two 18v batteries to power more powerful 36v motors.
Makita was the first to introduce 18V Li-ion cordless tools. Today, the LXT system is the world’s largest compatible 18V battery system, fitting over 325 tools.
Bosch ProCORE18V

Bosch Professional’s ProCORE18V series is compatible with all batteries of the Bosch Professional 18V system and the AMPShare Alliance. Users can choose from three different options: Compact, Performance, and Endurance, depending on the power consumption of the tool. A strong point of Bosch is their CoolPack technology that ensures that the batteries stay cool, significantly extending the service life. The Bluetooth connectivity module allows control of charging modes via smartphone and provides information on battery status. Bosch also boasts the world’s fastest 18 V charger, which makes it possible to charge a ProCORE18V 8.0Ah battery from 0 to 80% in 32 minutes.
Milwaukee M18 RedLithium series

Milwaukee’s M18 RedLithium range boasts remarkably high power and long runtime. According to Milwaukee’s statement, RedLithium batteries offer up to 40% more run time, 20% greater power, and 50% more charges than conventional Li-ion batteries.
The batteries of the RedLithium series are also distinguished by their performance under extreme conditions on the shop floor, from temperatures down to -20°C to extreme heat, staying up to 20% cooler than conventional Li-ion batteries. The RedLithium series is compatible with all Milwaukee M18 products.
